I can’t believe how well things are tracking so far in 2017. March and April are jam-packed with major heavy gigs for our now 9-piece Soul Cupcake. Adding Antony Sutherland on Trumpet has just fattened the whole horn section out. I always felt that our 3-piece horn section needed more beef and adding ‘Tone’ on trumpet has made our 4-piece horn section sound like there’s 5 or 6.
Also we’ve added the Chaka Khan classic ‘Ain’t Nobody’ and David Bowie’s ‘As The World Falls Down’ (from Labyrinth) to our list of rearranged pop classics. ‘As The World Falls Down’ is something new for us. The horns and rhythm section are really orchestral sounding and the rhythm section is holding down a straight forward bossa groove which gives Julia freedom to explore that awesome melody line.
Most importantly the gig line-up for March and April is truly epic!
Firstly we hit our home away from home .. ‘The Spotted Mallard’ in Brunswick for an all out funk and dance extravaganza. We’ll be leaving the slow songs at home and pumping out a full-on party vibe.
6 days later we’re trying something COMPLETELY new. Soul Cupcake plays ‘The Paris Cat’s – Parisian Loft’ for an intimate show. An intimate show with a 9-piece band is perhaps difficult to imagine but we’ve taken great care when crafting the song choice and setlist to give it an intimate feel and we’re really looking forward to this one.
Finally on Saturday 29th April we head back down to the stylish surrounds of ‘Bird’s Basement’! Our last gig at Bird’s (a Wednesday 5 days before Christmas) SOLD OUT and now we feel we need to pull out all of the stops to up the ante once more.
This gig will be a 9-cylinder engine on full throttle and highlight every corner of our repertoire. The guys are seriously pumped and this will be an absolute cracker!
